A Brief Biography Captain William Kidd (1645–1701) was a Scottish sailor whose legacy straddles the line between privateer and pirate. Commissioned by the English Crown to hunt pirates in the Indian Ocean, Kidd instead turned to piracy himself, capturing merchant vessels and amassing considerable wealth.
His most famous prize was the Armenian ship *Quedagh Merchant*, laden with silk and gold. Betrayed by his patrons and arrested upon returning to New York, Kidd was tried for piracy and murder, convicted, and executed in London—becoming one of history's most notorious maritime outlaws.
His controversial life and dramatic downfall cemented his place in pirate folklore.
