On August 2, 1876, while playing a game of five-card draw poker at Nuttal & Mann's Saloon No. 10 in Deadwood, Dakota Territory (modern-day South Dakota), Hickok was shot in the back of the head by an assassin named Jack McCall. According to the legend popularized in Frank J. Wilstach's 1926 book Wild Bill Hickok: The Prince of Pistoleers, Hickok was holding this exact combination of cards when he died. The unknown fifth card varies depending on the telling, though the most widely accepted story claims it was the Queen of Clubs or the Jack of Diamonds.
